Week 220 “Habeas Corpses”

in 238 Weeks

This week has been a good one. I got a chance to talk with a few of my favorite people about money. I love it when that happens. I know that most people — Americans anyway — are weird about talking about money. It’s a taboo subject. We don’t talk about how much money we make or how much debt we have. So it was awesome that a few people approached me this week to talk about money. One of them told me she’s reading Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. That just lit me up like a Christmas tree. His books have been so influential in our lives and the idea that someone I care so much about is reading him just makes me happy. He lays out really clear debt solutions. And I like to say “If I can follow his plan, anyone can!” It’s really true. I used to be horrible with money. I won’t even tell you what my credit score used to be. It is too embarrassing. I would tell you my score now, but it would be bragging. And besides, as Dave says — the FICO score is an “I love debt” score and I am never going into debt again.

We have taken care of the debt the old fashioned way — one dollar at a time. I’m not saying that debit consolidation is bad, it just wasn’t for us. Mainly because if you do the math with those things, you’ll see that it costs a lot of money to consolidate debt. You lower your interest rate (maybe) but you lower your monthly payment and add an average of three years to your payoff date. Three years? I got stuff I want to do now, not in three years so I’ll buckle down and pay the debt off one at a time, like Dave teaches.

OK. Let’s talk about the Angel episode — “Habeas Corpses” was this week’s episode. As you might imagine from the title, not a feel good episode. And yet, these days zombies are all the rage, right? Or have they had their 15 minutes and have been replaced by something else? I can’t keep up. This is a tense episode. We know that Angel knows about Connor and Cordelia’s (seemingly) one night stand. When he finds out that Connor is trapped inside Wolfram and Hart, he goes in for the rescue. Which is exactly — sort of — what Wesley does. He’s broken up with Lilah but he shows up to bring her out of the building. I think when Lilah does her whole “black and white and gray” speech, she’s talking about herself as well. She can never undo the bad stuff she’s done — she can never be white, so why settle for gray? Especially because there are always people to remind you of your less than pure status.

The episode ends with Angel frankly, calling Conner Cordelia’s boyfriend, so now Cordelia knows what we, the audience, knows. And then the episode ends! What is gonna happen next week?
